top 10 highest paid footballers

Since Cristiano Ronaldo recently signed a contract extension with Real Madrid he’s now the top paid football player in the world when it comes exclusively to salary. This doesn't include all the sponsorships and freebies these guys rake in every year. Five of the top 10 play in the Premier League and all salary figures are in euros.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) €17M

The Portuguese international forward won’t starve anytime soon as he’s now reportedly making 17 million euros with Spain’s Real Madrid and repaying them by scoring about a goal per game on average.

2. Lionel Messi (Barcelona) €16M

The Argentine international striker pulls in 16 million euros a year, just one million less than Ronaldo. However, the Barcelona star is in trouble with the taxman over in Spain and could have to fork over 21 million euros in fines if he’s found guilty of income tax evasion.

Monaco has some money to throw around and 14 million euros of it is going to Colombian striker Radamel Falcao. The French Ligue 1 side had to beat off a lot of competition to get him to sign his name on the dotted line this summer.

4. Zlatan Ibrahimovic (PSG) €13.8M

This Swedish striker has always been one of the best paid players on the planet because of his ability to put the ball in the net. He also recently signed an extension with the French Ligue 1 team and currently makes 13.8 million euros a year.

5. Wayne Rooney (Manchester United) €13.8M

The first and only Englishman on the list now that David Beckham has hung up his boots. The Manchester United striker is also the best paid in the Premier League and gets 13.8 million euros a season, the same as Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Argentine forward Sergio Aguero gets paid handsomely for his goals and is currently cashing in 13.5 million euros each season. City fans are sure he's worth it after helping them win the league in 2011/12.

7. Yaya Toure (Manchester City) €13M

The Ivory Coast international midfielder is arguably Manchester City’s best player. However, he’s number two when it comes to pay cheques as he’s making 13 million euros every 12 months.

8. Thiago Silva (PSG) €12M

Brazilian international defender Thiago Silva makes better than average money by playing with Paris Saint Germain in the French Ligue 1. He pulls in 12 million euros a year, a million a month.

Spanish international playmaker David Silva may be an underrated player, but he’s not treated that way when the cheques are handed out. He also makes 12 million euros a year.

10. Fernando Torres (Chelsea) €10.8M

Spanish international Fernando Torres striker is still making great money at 10.8 million euros a year with Chelsea even though his scoring feats have dried up somewhat since leaving Liverpool.
